Things I'm Working On
I’ve taken many photos of this old truck but never could seem to get one I liked. Most of the shots were taken at the wrong time of day and the pictures turned out flat. I don’t typically think of vehicles as having texture, but this one does. When I look at this picture I can feel the rust and paint flaking off as I run my hand across the cold uneven surface. Shot on a rare snowy day in South Carolina.
The original color version of this picture is much less interesting. I nearly discarded it as I reviewed the images from the day, but because the sky was so clear and void of any features I decided to try converting it to black and white. The result is one of my favorite pictures. Here’s what it looked like at first glance:
This is the remains of Glendale Mill in Glendale, SC. The mill, which had been closed for 43 years, was destroyed by a fire in 2004. There is an abundance of history associated with the area, including a Revolutionary War skirmish.

This was one of the first pictures I took on this morning. The sun is rising over Lawson’s Fork Creek and the remains of the Glendale Mill can be seen in the background. I stepped into the shadow of an overhanging tree to block the sun.
As I travelled to the mountains, the setting sun cast a magical effect on the landscape. Through the windshield I saw shot after shot develop. I didn’t get to take near as many pictures as I would have liked, but this is one I snapped from the side of the road.
