There are two things that bother me about buying produce at the store. One is the little stickers (barcodes) that are stuck to each piece of fruit or vegetable. The other is the hassle it causes at the checkout (either for you in self-checkout or the cashier) when there is no sticker to scan. This would be a great application for machine learning. As you placed each item on the scanner the display would suggest what it believes the fruit or vegetable to be. I can’t think of a way to discern whether the item would be organic or not. So the final process might require 1) confirmation of the item and 2) input from the consumer about whether it is organic or not. The screen might look something like this:
This looks like a banana. Is that correct? Yes / No
Is it Organic? Yes / No
